Apostrophe To Taspe Freleme Tvisyn
by Michael Laundry
“In other words, is a myth the memory of a hero's brilliant feat or that of the downfall of a world?”1
In other words, have we moved from myths of brilliance,
To declensionist narratives, in other words,
Stories about what happens when the world,
goes to the birds
A growing rage
Up in this hydroscenic2 age
An eco-vision of the future,
splendid, facile mature
1. Water and Dreams is the English translation of Bachelard’s 1942 work L'eau et les rêves.
Gaston Bachelard, “The Supremacy of Fresh Water,” in Water and Dreams: An Essay on the Imagination of Matter, trans. Edith R. Farrell (Dallas: Pegasus Foundation, 1983), 151–57.
2. I use the adjective ‘hydroscenic’ to refer to Bronwyn Bailey-Charteris, The Hydrocene: Eco-Aesthetics in the Age of Water (London: Routledge, 2024). I wrote a review of the book for the Journal of Curatorial Studies in Summer 2025. It was eventually rejected by the editors.
