<description>&#38;nbsp; &#38;nbsp; UBI SUNT 3 THE SWIMMER: Playful Drifting and ‘Spoiled Identities’

	THE SWIMMER
The Swimmer is a research-based interdisciplinary video and time-based site-specific conceptual installation/performance/video project that experiments with live video editing projected on screens mounted in pools and underwater sculptures to be used for choreographed dance. As a multi-disciplinary artist, my own embodiment and costuming of characters drawn from feminist screenwriter Eleanor Perry’s archives are presented as a tableux to be deconstructed.

The Swimmer: Playful Drifting and ‘Spoiled Identities’ is a visual exploration of feminist screenwriter Eleanor Perry’s archives. Within the context of how we as users of social media ‘swim’ along with an algorithmic data flow, conflictual sets of data or media are used to construct identities in hypercomplex exchanges of information. The speculative use of video installations at cite-specific exhibition spaces - for example, live scrolling or direct messaging and live-video editing - can be used as visual tools to investigate how social media plays a role in the way we co-construct identity. In the context of these emerging technologies and the #metoo movement, this artistic research project focuses on how multiple understandings of performing masculinity might be researched and given displaced contexts.

Using a central metaphor of the river found in John Cheever’s work ‘The Swimmer’ (1964), the confluence and the assemblage of concepts around identity-making are explored. The water is a medium and a metaphor for deconstruction of the performance of masculinity. John Cheever’s short story ‘The Swimmer’ (1964) and the feminist screen-writer Eleanor Perry’s screen-play (1968) of the same name are two literary and cinematic works that form a starting point for an investigation into 1) the river as a central metaphor for algorithmic influences in identity-making, and 2) how these works can offer new insights into a moment in which performing and visually representing masculinity is in crisis.&#38;nbsp;

Today, we are experiencing a paradigmatic shift in identity politics. The relevance of this artistic research project can be seen through the genesis of the #metoo movement. In the autumn of 2017 the sexual abuse allegations against Harvey Weinstein surfaced and by the summer of 2018 the widespread media coverage and discussion of sexual harassment, particularly in Hollywood, revealed to the world the magnitude of the problem faced. The summer of 2018 also marked the 50-year-anniversary of Eleanor Perry’s screenplay for ‘The Swimmer’ - a film adaptation of Cheever’s 1964 story about Neddy Merrell’s swim home along an imaginary river consisting of a string of suburban swimming pools.

The Swimmer proposes to examine the male body by the pool as a site for sociopolitical speculation. The project challenges earlier assumptions made by for example Marvin Carlson in Performance: A Critical Introduction (2004). The Swimmer project will use video installation and live-video editing and feedback loops (using ATEM Blackmagic instant replay in combination with video installations) to confront the audience with multiple versions of the same body, but with displaced subjectivities. This project sees a more nuanced possibility for the deconstruction of the male body as it is examined within the intersectionality of performance, technology and changing understandings of representations of masculinity.&#38;nbsp;

The project is ongoing‭, ‬and was first presented in 2018‭ ‬at Nordnes Sjøbad in cooperation with BiT Teatergarasjen‭, ‬AdO Arena and Bergen Dansesenter‭, and ‬Bergen Kommune. Its second iteration UBI SUNT 4 She-Wolf Defaced was presented at&#38;nbsp;BOA, billedkunstnerne i Oslo og Akershus as part of Oslo Art Weekend 2020 and “Oslo City #1” curated by Hedda Ottesen.

	Oedipus Water Dream
11. November - 1. December, 2025
LLLLLL Artist-Run Space

About 3-years-ago, I became crippled by a rare rheumatological disease. It was the worst and best thing that ever happened to me. It stopped me from sculpting. But, I started sculpting in VR and researching hydrotherapy. I had to take pain killers to sleep through the night. Then I got into the habit of waking myself up before they had run their course, and sculpting in VR between five and six am attempting to find dream-forms that related to my research on water”

- Michael Laundry

Oedipus Water Dream is a sculptural installation by Michael Laundry exploring the material relationship between water, dreams and psychoanalysis. The exhibition is the outcome of two and half years of working with water and VR as solutions to being disabled by Bekhterev's disease (ankylosing spondylitis). Most of the works in the exhibition are the result of what the artist describes as a “crip dream routine”. Like Leonora Carrington’s surrealist practice, the subconscious is in dialogue with what Gaston Bachelard calls the "material imagination" or that which is rooted in substance, particularly water.

Laundry focuses primarily on stiacciato (low) and alto (high) reliefs. The sculptures are executed in a diverse range of materials: glass, wood, resin, sandstone, marble, and mezzatint. They have an apotropaic function important to Laundry’s eco-critical position on safeguarding water. Most of the sculptures in the exhibition float.

The artist considers two texts as departure points for an exploration of water, dreaming, and creation: Deleuze and Guattari’s Anti-Oedipus (1972) and Gaston Bachelard’s Water and Dreams (1942).&#38;nbsp; Deleuze and Guattari argue traditional psychoanalysis - with its focus on the Oedipus complex - is essentially repressive. For Bachelard, water as an element in the "material imagination" is important to creative acts like poetry and painting. He suggests that by engaging the materiality of water artists might gain insights that a purely formal adoption of images based on fleeting shapes and emotions could not produce. Laundry’s exhibition at LLLLLL Artist-Run Gallery adopts Deleuze and Guattari’s critical position that the Freudian model has been used by society to control "flows" of desire, forcing it into an essentially repressive and heteronormative subjective structure rather than allowing it to be productive and socially queer. Oedipus Water Dream affirms both artistic and non-artistic practices that are generative rather than repressive.

The exhibition is part of laundry’s 8-year interdisciplinary research project “A History of Swimming” in the Blue Humanities interrogating urban waterscapes. In this iteration, the artist focuses on water imaginaries in Aspern - one of Europe's largest urban development projects. Part of the project looks at Vienna’s fast-growing 22nd district in the north-east of the city from a hydro-feminist position to imagine what a “high feel-good factor” (Wien 3420 AG) means for a vibrant material future where private enterprise meets the public demand for water recreation.

This is Laundry’s first major solo exhibition in Austria after establishing his practice at the intersection of visual arts, performance and the Blue Humanities. Laundry’s earlier hydrological research-based works have been selected by the Norwegian Institute of Marine Research’s “Effects of Climate Change on the World’s Ocean” ECCW (2023) conference, organized in collaboration with UNESCO’s Intergovernmental Oceanic Commission’s “Ocean Decade”. His research on public waterscapes has been presented at 10th EASLCE European Association for the Study of Literature, Culture and the Environment Symposium, Sea More Blue: Interdisciplinary Approaches to Blue Ecopoetics in Perpignan, France (2024)

Apostrophe To Taspe Freleme Tvisyn

by Michael Laundry

“In other words, is a myth the memory of a hero's brilliant feat or that of the downfall of a world?”1

In other words, have we moved from myths of brilliance,

To declensionist narratives, in other words,

Stories about what happens when the world,

goes to the birds

A growing rage

Up in this hydroscenic2 age

An eco-vision of the future,

splendid, facile mature

1.&#38;nbsp; Water and Dreams is the English translation of Bachelard’s 1942 work L'eau et les rêves.

Gaston Bachelard, “The Supremacy of Fresh Water,” in Water and Dreams: An Essay on the Imagination of Matter, trans. Edith R. Farrell (Dallas: Pegasus Foundation, 1983), 151–57.
2.&#38;nbsp; I use the adjective ‘hydroscenic’ to refer to Bronwyn Bailey-Charteris, The Hydrocene: Eco-Aesthetics in the Age of Water (London: Routledge, 2024). I wrote a review of the book for the Journal of Curatorial Studies in Summer 2025. It was eventually rejected by the editors.

Event starts at 19:00

SIND gallery hosts Michael Laundry's A History of Swimming: Swimming in Reykjavik. The project explores the role of the river poet and eco-phenomenology. Athletic choreography, and memorable monologues appear as 'complementary epistemologies', a term from Louise Westling's 'Darwin in Arcadia. Brute Being and the Human Animal Dance from Gilgamesh to Virginia Wolf' (2006).

The project is part of the artist's long-term project A History of Swimming examining waterscapes and hydro-choreography.

In Reykjavik, Laundry finds supportive waterscapes for making art that discusses pools and politics. Laundry embodies Wolfgang Streeck - a river poet reciting a love letter to Eleanor Perry (1914-1981). Perry was a feminist screenwriter. She wrote the 1968 screen adaptation of The Swimmer (1968). The address to Perry reflects on the loss of public pools as a trend that reveals “new patterns of consumption in the private sector encouraging the privatization of existing public services” namely public pools (Streeck, 2017).

UBI SUNT 6&#38;nbsp; “MEET ME AT THE POOL”
23 -31 July 2021

The UBI SUNT 6 “Meet
Me at the Pool” is a 3D printed sculptural installation presenting Laundry’s
take on pool party topographies in Virtual Reality.&#38;nbsp; The public is invited into a subterranean
pool party at OVE Gallery. The exhibition is a celebratory deconstruction of
poolside performativity. With fountains, pools, and bathing suits Laundry
creates an immersive world in which the pool or stadtbäder are sites for
sociopolitical speculation on swimmers as neoliberal assets.

Laundry’s scenographic
constellation of 3D printed pools sculpted in VR alongside lighting
installation using laser engraved glass brings to focus the increasing
superficiality of poolscapes for commercial purposes. In doing so, the
multi-media installation asks the public to consider what our public pools mean
to us. The immersive world comes to life as Laundry fills the underground pool
with water and transforms into the Head of the Max Plank Institute Dr. Wolfgang
Streeck. In a speculative love letter to an unsung heroine of a proto #metoo
movement Eleanor Perry, Laundry enacts a delicate and heartfelt incantation on
post-human phenomenology, and our very personal relations to water.

UBI SUNT 6 “Meet Me at
The Pool” is part of Laundry’s ongoing research project on site-specific hydro-choreography
and the Eleanor Perry Papers Archival Repository
at the Margaret Herrick Library at The Online Archive of California
OAC. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

13.-15.JUNE.2024

Opening: 13.06.2024 at 6pm / Performances: 7pm moriaariava and ddylanbbakker (ghuzheng and guitar)
8pm Michael Laundry (Duration:20 min)
Exhibition: 14. &#38;amp; 15.06. from 3pm to 7pm

Michael Laundry is a
Norwegian artist based in Bergen, and curator of MLAG (Mikey Laundry Art
Garden). Stadtbäder Spaßbäder is part of his research project
concerned with water commons and art. The exhibition at Neon Kunst offers a
rich diversity of materials and methods: textile paintings, lithographs,
drawings, stone carvings, woodcarvings, video, sculptures and performance.
Together they represent detritus that has been turned into art objects from
found material during the artist´s cartographic exploration of strange places
and encounters with life along the edge of the sea and poolscapes private and
public.

The titular significance of the exhibition takes its name from examples of new
patterns of consumption in the private sector that encourage the privatization
of existing public services, namely swimming pools. Wolfgang Streeck argues
that in the post-war period, almost every local community had a public pool.
They were simple, even austere, but nevertheless well-used, due to the general
belief that they were good for people’s health and that children had a duty to
learn how to swim, both to build character and to be able to rescue others from
drowning. However, with time more and more public pools closed. At the same
time, the rise of fun baths or Spaßbäder began to take their
place.
Laundry’s artistic practice focuses on neoliberalization and access to public
waterscapes.
In 1951, marine biologist and environmental activist Rachel Carson addressed
the significance of healthy ocean life systems and famously described the ´edge
of the sea´ as a ´strange and beautiful place’, an ancient and hidden world
that continues pulsing magically into the present. For Carson and Laundry, the
edge of the sea, rivers and pools provide an elusive and indefinable boundary,
known as the intertidal zone where earth, wind and water merge to form
ecosystems, and space for sociopolitical speculation.
In a moment where coastal ecology faces collapse and accelerated privatization
of public access to waterscapes challenges us, chance encounters with voices
from the depths must be heard. For example, what does a chance meeting with
Anthropologist Anna Tsing or Sociologist Wolfgang Streeck tell us about our
precarious relationship with water in the Hydrocene? Laundry invites the public
to attest to their reports and build rapport with a vast array of oceanic
communities, as well as both human and non-human life along this fantastic
voyage.

	H-E-DOUBLE-HOCKEY-STICKS
APRIL- MAY 2022

As an American child living in a strict Catholic house, Michael Laundry was not allowed to swear. The titular significance of Laundry’s installation “H-E-Double-Hockey-Sticks” is a euphemistic stand-in for “hell”.
In this exhibition, motifs made in VR are transmogrified onto jacquard pieces
woven on a digital loom. The weave is framed by a tufted frame, with a video installation above. The phallic motifs in the weave playfully, evasively,
intentionally, interact with multiple 3D printed sculptures. All of this is brought to life in a choreographed dance routine on rollerblades. The work may be a critique of the macho posing of Putin’s totalitarian
tendencies to put civil society on ice, or perhaps it might be Laundry’s on story of regret. &#38;nbsp;

Laundry paints and illustrates in VR. Their digital
paintbrush spills across the photography of Putin onto tufted carpets and vinyl floor-prints. Laundry starts with a solid 3D sculpture, then stretches it out across physical
materials. A strand of exploration for this project is to consider the way that
the warping of a motif made in VR can occur physically by using thicker yarns
to elongate the motif in the digital weave. In this way, Laundry brings
attention to the stretching of the truth in an intensely personal refusal of
state-sponsored misinformation.

The culminating attention of the work centres on a strange
story about a corncob overheard between Russian President Vladimir Putin and
Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko. Late last year, the two paused for a
chat during a friendly hockey match following their talks in Strelna, outside
St. Petersburg, Russia a few days before Christmas.

Laundry creates wearable art and sculptures in VR. These digital works then become solid as
3D printed or CNC machined wearable sculptures and training gear, battle-ready instruments of
war and music, as well as reliefs for interactive video performance. In “PPP Please Wow Me”, the
individual potential of all the objects are harnessed to work as conceptually interrelated works of
art.

“PPP Please Wow Me” (2022) is a choreographed workout routine in a public light rail (Bergen Bybane) and live
streamed on CRT Monitors and projected on CNC machined sculptures in and around a fight cage at Galleri Knipsu. A large
focus of the work takes a CNC machined sculpture in the middle of a fight cage as a canvas for
live video installations and interactive media performance. Laundry uses sound, video and lighting cues to draw out the sculpture’s topography as a place for a critical feminist speculation on
virtual bodies and crypto art.

The choreographed piece takes place live streamed from Lydgalleriet in the centre of Bergen
following a 35 minute training route to the suburbs at Galleri Knipsu. The performance continues
in situ at Knipsu for a 16-minute live performance in which Laundry tells the strange story of the
rise of women’s NFT communities and their cooptation by pop star Madonna.

The project is part live-streamed city tour, and part high-pressure physical training ground of
Guy Debord’s “Theory of the Dérive” In it Laundry explores how so-called crypto art is itself
contributing to destabilized notions of the self in online communities. Physical training and a
new genre of crypto art made for profile pictures are part of the world Laundry examines. The
project specifically focuses on the NFT-World of Women phenomenon. The World of Women
(WoW) NFT is a collection of 10,000 non-fungible tokens (NFTs). It is promoted as a tool for
female empowerment by Madonna after she was brought in as considerable investor in the NFTs.

In this exhibition motifs made in VR are transmogrified onto CNC machined extruded polystyrene and 3D printed resin parts. The torso motifs playfully work as a critique of NFT representation
and genderwashing of the body in the age of perfectly sculpted social-media bodies.

Laundry sculpts and paints in VR on a daily bases, as a kind of digital training ground. Their
digital tool kit is presented at Knipsu. Laundry’s process starts with a solid 3D sculpture, then it
is stretched out across physical materials. A strand of exploration for this project is to consider
the way that the pumping up of physical features in digital space can occur physically. The culminating attention of the work centers on a live performance in a fight cage that pumps up and
deflates expectations about the fight to catch the glamour and investment opportunity of NFT
avatars.

	“Discount Daddy”&#38;nbsp;
 2022

The argument, “my child could have done that” has been
evoked often in modern art. What happens when the elite actually does recognize
an amateur? The history of Arte Brute, and so-called outsider art is explored
in Discount Daddy.

Does sculpting in VR and 3D printing make one an accepted
Scultor? Is there a difference between Brâncusi and Oliver Laric. In “Discount
Daddy”, Laundry addresses these concerns in an immersive multi-media work and
sculptural installation and durational performance. Additionally, Laundry’s insouciant
attitude towards fatherhood, DIY culture, and the art canon comes through in a
speculative film and sculpture.&#38;nbsp;

Sculptural practice in the expanded field technically covers
3D printed sculptures. But does a father getting a Lego 3D print wrong count as
art? What does unintentionally making Norway’s most famous contemporary
sculpture show us about the ongoing debate about what counts as art?&#38;nbsp;Hal Foster reminds us that French critic Nicolas Bourriaud has championed
such art under the term of “post-production,”. The term helps understand Laundry’s sculpture. It underscores the secondary
manipulations often constitutive of it. Yet the term also suggests a changed status
in the work of art in an age of digital information, which is said to follow those of
industrial production. After Benjamin’s Art in the Age of Mechanical Production, Laundry’s installation gestures at polemical positions between the amature/professional, high/low art, and the value of the original.

In Discount Daddy,
the audience is introduced to a strange incident, which might have occurred in
2021 creating an international feud between Norway and Denmark. Laundry’s
speculative incident may have also created a schism within the contemporary
arts community. Discount Daddy dreams about the Norwegian “Statens
kunstutstilling, Høstutstillingen” arguably, the most anticipated exhibition of
the year in Norway. It bestows artistic prowess guaranteeing favourable
critical and commercial success to the artist. Discount Daddy takes multiple perspectives on an alternative
reality where Laundry was selected as the jury winner at Høstutstillingen. The
speculative film plays with mocumentary as a celebration of Laundry as an
artist who has “made it. It also includes Professor Henrik B. Anderssen
discussing a much discussed critique of Laundry published in Kunstkritikk.

Rather than a rebuttal to traditionalists reverence for the
“artist’s hand”, Laundry brings the human element back into the process of 3D
printing that is often dispossessed from human creations.&#38;nbsp; Not only does Laundry explore what is
precious between the art object and the artist, but what is precious between a
3D printed toy and one’s daughter.

						TABOO COOKING: THE HIDDEN CUISINE

Taboo Cooking: The Hidden Cuisine is speculative film that asks where or what is hidden when we say taboo.

In the Atlantic, culinary writer, Jonah Lehrer writes, “this is the moral of the kitchen: even the most mundane rituals deserve our attention. And maybe they deserve it most of all. To cook is to insist that every hunger is a potential occasion, not just for something delicious (because deliciousness can be easily bought), but for that quality of experience that comes when the flame is on high and the last knob of butter is being whisked into the sauce”. From this premise, Laundry (aka Laun) asks what hunger is taboo, and where is the hidden cuisine?&#38;nbsp;

The idea behind the
project is to create an esoteric adventure cooking programme. The aesthetic
of the programme uses expert underwater filming, costume design and studio
kitchen to look like something shot for the Jamie Oliver studio.

The profesional look of a traditional cooking programme is meant to be misleading with slightly offbeat interviews, meditations and hand-drawn maps of
the destinations to the Bohuslän coast.
